Check out this trailer first:

So what’s War and Remembrance - Volume 1 all about?

The ambitious TV event War and Remembrance was the final opus in the golden age of the maxi-miniseries. This six-disc set offers the first half (seven episodes) of ABC’s mammoth 30-hour production of Herman Wouk’s bestseller–itself a sequel to the landmark Winds of War–mixing fictional and real characters around the events of World War II. It starts a week after the attack on Pearl Harbor and abruptly stops in July 1943 with the fall of Mussolini. Only half of the first series’ lead actors return, including Robert Mitchum as the patriarch Captain “Pug” Henry. Although Mitchum is too old and less dashing than he should be, his presence is exactly what the series needs as it wavers between pop entertainment and a graphic look at the atrocities of war. The series’ multiple storylines branch from the Henry family tree, from his sons’ naval battles to his daughter-in-law’s (Jane Seymour) harrowing flight through Europe with her famous father (John Gielgud), witnessing firsthand the collapse of European Jewish life in the grip of Nazi power.

Director Dan Curtis said that after The Winds of War, the opportunity to show the Jews’ plight led him to take on another daunting production. He takes the viewer into Auschwitz with unflinching realism (producer and former internee Branko Lustig returned to the subject a decade later with Schindler’s List) and is just as deft with a few massive battle sequences combining models with colorized footage. Sometimes the soap opera of the characters’ affairs seems pretty sappy, especially with some uneven acting. The DVD set also contains two featurettes from 1988 and 2002. –Doug Thomas

Review of The Lost Prince

Friday, September 5th, 2008

The Lost Prince was an incredible movie! Both Daniel Williams (IV) and Matthew Thomas were amazing!

The great cast includes Daniel Williams (IV), Matthew Thomas, Brock Everitt-Elwick, Rollo Weeks, Gina McKee.

A marvelous reinvention of the costume epic, The Lost Prince is Stephen Poliakoff’s absorbing study of the turbulent years leading up to and during World War I, seen through the percipient eyes of a scarcely remembered royal child. Extensively researched, impeccably cast, beautifully filmed, written and directed by Poliakoff himself with masterly economy and restraint, this is a timely reminder that original, intelligent drama can work as prime-time entertainment while appealing on multiple levels; and there isn’t an escaped soap star in sight. Johnnie, the prince kept hidden away by his parents Queen Mary and George V for fear that his epileptic fits and idiosyncratic ways might draw unwelcome attention, is not presented as a tragic figure. His view of the great events that shatter his family and change the world forever is direct and uncluttered. Poliakoff celebrates his apartness–and that of all children who are different–as a force for good, without judging the standards, protocols, and contemporary medical theories that kept him on the periphery of society. The series makes the most of its well-chosen locations, and from Johnnie’s garden at Sandringham to the assassination of the Russian imperial family, it maintains a hypnotic and elegiac quality The acting is first-rate, too. Gina McKee is profoundly moving as Johnnie’s devoted nurse Lalla, and Miranda Richardson’s Mary is an extraordinary performance, the controlled facade of single-minded focus occasionally fracturing to reveal a flash of humanity. This production is exquisite in every respect. –Piers Ford

Watch to watch Empire online?

Check out this trailer first:

So what’s Empire all about?

John Leguizamo is, in his own words, “young, Latin, and good looking” as the ambitious minimogul of the South Bronx drug trade in Franc Reyes’ Latino twist on the urban crime saga. Reigning in his hyperactive energy, Leguizamo is like a coiled spring as the street-smart player who tries to leave the violence of his trade behind in an upwardly mobile odyssey, and Peter Sarsgaard brings a discomforting confidence to the smooth-talking investment banker trusted with his millions. Few of the other characters even register in the familiar underworld tale (though Denise Richards has fun as a bubbly, skin-deep seductress) and Reyes’s flashy style is as distracting as it is energizing. It’s the smoldering presence of Leguizamo that keeps the film centered through the betrayals, the bullet-riddled battles, and the slow realization that this cunning shark has just become bait in the deep seas of high finance. –Sean Axmaker

In creating MTV’s contribution to the decline of Western civilization, perverse clay-animation wizard Eric Fogel took the same technique used in lovable children’s specials and molded it into a twisted, bloody spectacle combining the best elements of professional wrestling, celebrity gossip shows, and Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome. It’s no surprise his hysterical result became popular enough to spawn its own series of home video highlights.

This clay-per-view special has legendary referee Mills Lane, tuxedo-clad announcers Johnny Gomez and Nick Diamond, and brassy interviewer Stacey Cornbred presenting as much muscle and mayhem as the rich and famous can deliver. Eerily detailed clay contestants include “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, Cindy Crawford, Janeane Garofalo, and comedian Chris Rock, who attempts to feed Adam Sandler into a giant razor-sharp fan. On the minus side, the editing is fast and furious–at 45 minutes, the collection winds down just before it wears you out. The humor tends to be topical and relies on the same meat-rending joke played out in countless different ways: annoying celebrities-of-the-moment get all the agony they deserve. On the plus side, this one joke can be pretty darn funny. When snarling songbird Celine Dion starts yanking out punk rocker Keith Flint’s body-piercings, you don’t really need to know a thing about the players that isn’t mentioned in the nonstop color commentary. Despite your higher instincts, you just start laughing… after all, as they say, it’s just clay. –Grant Balfour

Ok, let’s look at The Fighting Seabees / Wake Of The Red Witch.

First, the movie is about THE FIGHTING SEABEES - All-American hero John Wayne takes a crew of construction workers and turns them into one of WWII’s toughest fighting forces in this action-packed war classic. After having convinced the Army brass to let his civilians bear arms, Wedge Donovan ( Wayne) whips his new troops into combat shape. But when he leads his unit in an alll-out assult against the Japanese, Donovan is brought up on court-martial charges and must fight for his life on a new battlefield. THE FIGHTING SEABEES offers an entertaining combination of strong supporting performances by Daniel O’Keefe and ravishing, about-to-be-superstar Susan Hayward; brawlinlg, big budget action sequences; and an Oscar-nominated score- all of which led Leonard Maltin to give “3 stars” to this spirited saga turned box office bonanza. WAKE OF THE RED WITCH - John Wayne battles enemies above and below the waves - including a giant killer octopus - in WAKE OF THE RED WITCH. This sprawling epic adventure pits the tough-minded Captain Ralls (John Wayne) against the treacherous Captain Sidneye (Luther Adler) in a bitter rivalry on a South Seas isle. At stake is a fortune in pearls hidden in an underwater cave. At risk is the hand of the beautiful Angelique (Gail Russell), daughter of Desiax, the tyrant ruler of the island who plans to marry her off to Sidneye. In an attempt to rescue Angelique, Ralls must seize the pearls and exchange them for her freedom. The danger continues as fate holds one final test of strength and bravery for the bold Captain and the woman he loves..

I really enjoyed the performace of Susan Hayward and Susan Hayward. The rest of the cast was solid as well. The cast includes John Wayne, Susan Hayward, Dennis O’Keefe, William Frawley, Leonid Kinskey.
